The Santarém International Film Festival closes its 18th edition with the national premiere of "MUYERES", a film that celebrates the power of memory, tradition, and identity. According to Catalan director Marta Lalanna, the protagonists of this film are among the last living keepers of this centuries-old Asturian tradition — made up of songs, ballads, and knowledge over 500 years old — which has survived thanks to the oral memory of our ancestors.
"When I first travelled to Asturias to meet them, I realised there were only a few traces left of that former way of life. I was fascinated by the beauty of that urgency, and what drove me to begin this project was the desire to portray these women, to film their identity before it is irrevocably forgotten. Few things can save us from the loss of collective memory — but cinema is certainly one of them," says the director.
This film by Marta Lalanna won the Grand Jury Prize and Best Cinematography Award at the Shanghai International Film Festival, establishing itself as one of the most striking works of the year.
